塑化症是一種在海鳥身上發現的纖維化疾病。科學家收集死去的肉足水薙鳥雛鳥，發現牠們的前胃（胃用於消化的一部分）因塑膠碎片導致發炎，形成過多疤痕組織，引發塑化症。這些雀鳥的胃裡平均有30塊左右的塑膠，有的甚至超過200塊。這種疾病會影響牠們消化及處理食物的能力，並有影響攝取營養、導致抵抗力下降等問題。
Plasticosis is a new fibrotic disease identified in sea birds. Scientists collected samples of dead flesh-footed fledglings and discovered their proventriculus, a part of the stomach for digestions, were heavily scarred by plastic pieces and developed plasticosis. there are about 30 pieces of plastic in the birds’ stomachs in average, and some had over 200 pieces. This disease affects their ability to digest and process food, and caused difficulties with deriving nutrients and fighting off infections and parasites.
