Four days of extreme rain in Indonesia last November killed 58 critically endangered Tapanuli orangutans, about 7% of the population. They died in catastrophic landslides, floods, and heavy rainfall; many were buried under mud and debris, while others were crushed by falling trees or drowned. The government has temporarily prohibited industrial activities such as mining and hydropower in the affected area, but conservationists are calling for permanent protection, climate‑responsive planning, and funding for biodiversity recovery.
