塞馬環斑海豹會於凍結的湖面上用雪堆造巢繁殖，但全球暖化令芬蘭塞馬湖的降雪量大大減少。自2014年，義工會在冬天到塞馬湖把雪堆到湖面，希望助雌性環斑海豹繁殖。塞馬環斑海豹是芬蘭塞馬湖的特有種，亦是現時最瀕危的海豹，野外只餘下約400隻。

Saimaa ringed seal nests on the frozen Saimaa Lake with snowdrifts, but because of climate change, the amount of snows decreased sharply in the past winters. Since 2014, volunteers start creating man-made snowdrifts on the frozen lake in the winter, and hope that can help females to give birth to their pups. Saimaa ringed seal is endemic to Finland’s Saimaa Lake, and is the most endangered seal species with only around 400 left in the wild.
