棲息於中國東南部及緬甸北部的中國小熊貓，毛色較紅，尾巴條紋鮮明，而棲息在喜馬拉雅山脈地區的喜馬拉雅小熊貓臉部毛色較白，尾巴條紋較不分明；兩者一直被分類為兩個亞種。但最近有研究發現牠們的基因有明顯的遺傳差異，應被列作兩個獨立物種。

The Chinese red panda is found in southeastern china and northern Myanmar, it has redder fur and more prominent tail ring patterns; the Himalayan red panda habitats in the Himalayas has whiter fur on its face and less distinct patterns on its tail.
. They were classified as subspecies perviously, but a recent research found they are genetically diverged from each other, and should be two different species.
