The nonprofit Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve has been conserving the Atlantic Forest in Brazil by purchasing deserted agricultural lands for restoration. They have collected seeds of over 120 species native plants from nearby mature forests for the seedlings for restorations. They worked with communities and NGOs to restore 15 million hectares of land since 2009, planted 750000 trees to support hundreds of species of birds, and they were able to reintroduced the lowland tapir, which has been extinct in the area for 100 years.
