Conservation groups successfully gained protection for bumblebees by pushing the court to list bumblebees as “fish” under the California Endangered Species Act, where fish is defined to include “invertebrate” and it did not require to be “aquatic”. All four species of bumblebees in California are threatened by heavy pesticides use and climate changes; their numbers are declining and also affecting plants that rely on them for pollination.
