A 3-year study in Nigeria, Africa, shows that, 98% of the local pangolins were caught for their meat instead of scales, and an estimate 21,000 pangolins were killed each year in the area. These pangolins were caught during local hunting trips; most of the time they were consumed by the hunters instead of traded locally as food. Their meat cost 3-4 times more than their scales in local markets.
