In 2023, over 700 marine animals were killed by shark nets and drum lines in Queensland’s coast. These nets and drum lines were targeted to catch or kill great white sharks and tiger sharks. However, more than 600 non-target animals were caught including humpback whales, dugongs, sea turtles and dolphins, and over 400 were dead. Experts said there is no clear scientific evidence support these nets and drum lines can reduce shark attacks.
