秘魯東南部的一項研究發現，五彩金剛鸚鵡的父母通常只會撫養一隻或有時兩隻最年長的雛鳥，並會棄養較年幼的雛鳥，而且這並不是因為食物或資源短缺。研究人員試圖拯救這些被遺棄的雛鳥，將牠們放到因被捕食而失去雛鳥的金剛鸚鵡的巢內，這個「寄養計劃」已在 3 個繁殖季成功重新安置了 28 隻雛鳥。這項研究能讓研究員了解鸚鵡的養育行為，並有助拯救瀕危鸚鵡的保育工作。

A study in Southeastern Peru found scarlet macaw parent usually raise one or sometimes two of their eldest chicks, but abandon the younger ones not because of food or resources shortage. Researchers tried to save these abandoned chicks by placing them in the nests with macaws that have lost their chicks to predation, and this “fostering program”  has successfully re-homed 28 chicks across 3 breeding seasons. this study helped researchers to understand the parenting behavior of parrots and can asset with future conservation work when saving endangered parrots.
