In Tasmania, a salmon farm killed more than 50 great cormorants after they received the permits to shoot the birds as a “last resort” last year because the birds cause damage to their salmons. Their employees claimed they tried to shoot and scare the birds but was not success. There were also 36 birds entangled in the netting covering their salmon pens. the nets were supposed to to prevent birds to enter their salmon pens, but when the company was asked whether the problem was caused by lack of maintenance of the nets, or the used of oversized netting, they did not respond.
