Thousands of flying-foxes died in south‑eastern Australia this past January during an extreme heat event, with temperatures exceeding 42 °C. Grey‑headed flying‑fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) is a vulnerable species endemic to Australia. Unlike most other mammals, flying‑foxes cannot regulate their body temperature effectively, so heatwaves can quickly lead to dehydration and heat stress, ultimately causing organ failure and death.
