Mountain lions are protected species in the Santa Monica Mountain. Recently, one male was killed legally because it harmed livestocks owned by the same property owner for three times. Even though the incidents took place outside the area covered by the State policy, the California Department of Fish & Wildlife explained that the property owner had already tried to use non-lethal means to protect the property before getting the permit for killing this lion was issued. Mountain lions in that area are threatened by urbanization and habitat fragmentation. there were only two known breeding males in this small population, and this male lion was one of them. Biologists that study this group of lions are working on the inbreeding problem will get worse.
