Arctic ground squirrels are able to survive in extreme winter in Alaska by hibernating for over half the year. However, their hibernation period is shorter because climate change affected the soil temperature, and females emerge earlier every year while males are not. This allows the females to use less stored fat during hibernation and can begin foraging earlier; but this might create bigger chance for them to become food for other predators, and not emerging with the males might affect their reproduction chance as well.
