尼泊爾南部平原的大象以往可以自由遷徙,但隨著人類的發展,牠們在遷徙時與人類的衝突日益加劇。透過保育工作、教育及政府政策,Bahundangi村民已經學會了與野生大象共存。其中一個重大轉折點是,當地的環保人士鼓勵農民改種一些大象不吃的農作物,例如茶、檸檬,以及養蜜蜂。而這改變,令農田對大象的吸引力減少,農民也不再需要擔心失去農作物及收入。
Elephants in Nepal’s southern plains could move freely before, but with human developments, the conflict with human increases when they migrants. With conservation efforts, education and government policies, villagers in Bahundangi have learnt to coexist with the wild elephants. One of the major turning point was when a local conservationist encouraged farmers to switch planting crops elephants won’t eat, like tea and lemons, as well as beekeeping. With this change, their farmlands became less attractive to the elephants, farmers no longer need to worry about losing their crops and income.
