A university student from China was caught smuggling 125 insects and spiders through Sydney Airport in January this year and was fined A$35,000. The seizure included banded huntsman spiders, carabid beetles, and scarabs, etc. Those that were still alive were sent to a wildlife hospital, although they rarely survive the impacts of illegal trade.
